About the memorial: The memorial was unveiled by General Sir Charles Carmichael Monro on Sunday 5th June 1921. The General addressed the gathered crowd and the sixty names were read out. This was followed by The Last Post before the Memorial was handed over to the care of the schoolchildren for all time. Prayers followed and afterwards a hymn was sung to the accompaniment of The Banstead Band. There followed a minute's silence and the ceremony ended with one verse of God save the King. It is probable that relatives laid flowers at the end of the ceremony. At that time, the names of the men who had fallen in the Great War were inscribed on the top panels of the Memorial. After the 1939/45 War, the names of the Villagers who fell in that War were inscribed on the lower panels of the Memorial. In September 1996, the memorial was moved by a few yards to allow for junction improvements. It currently stands at the junction of High Street and Park Road. The Banstead History Research Group has published a book called These Men of Banstead - Stories from the War Memorial. Listed Grade II, List Entry Number: 1458546
