About the memorial: The War Memorial in Gostrey Meadow was designed by architect W.C Watson and constructed by local stonemasons Patrick's by the South Street entrance. £900 was raised by public subscription. The memorial is 23 feet hight constructed in portland stone in a hexagonal configuration. The Memorial was unveiled on April 10th 1921. The dedication of the panels and the unveiling of the names of those who died in the Second World War was undertaken by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and the Bishop of Guildford on 8th July 1951.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

The Memorial includes the Coat of Arms of Farnham Urban District Council, a mythical pelican, and the inscription 1914 1918 In Grateful Memory of the Men of Farnham who gave their lives for their country. What I gave I have. The lower panel has the incription: 1939 1945 And of the men and women of Farnham who lost their lives by enemy action in the second world war.

The upper level of the Memorial has six panels with details of 278 people who died in Word War 1. The lower level has the names of 102 people who died in World War 2.
