About the memorial: A stone calvary topped cross on a tall stem set on an octagonal, footed plinth standing on a 3 step, lipped, octagonal base. On the middle step is a dedication on one side and a Latin phrase on another all in black, incised lettering. On one face of the plinth is a text, in black, uppercase, incised lettering, saying who created the memorial in 1903.

In 1903 this monument was subscribed and erected by the people of Chawton and the Hampshire Regt.Corporal Ernest White 7th (...) Hampshire Regt. Born December (...) 1879, died at Blomfontein May 16th 1901 from the effect of wounds received when rescuing a comrade near Clocolan in Orange River Colony March 24th 1901. Jesu Mercy.
