About the memorial: Wheel cross of rough-hewn Cornish granite surmounting cairn stone base. Stone tablet at front of cairn bears WWI names, tablet at base bears WWII names and Falkland name beneath. Memorial built as part of the Boltons Bench landscape (a local hill landmark), and placed off of the Southampton and Beaulieu roads. The location was chosen due to its proximity to the WWI "Lyndhurst Camp" and the then "Grand Hotel" (later the "Lyndhurst Park Hotel", now "Glasshayes House") which can be seen from the memorial, and where Major General T. Capper had his headquarters, with officers of the "Immortal 7th" division stationed at the hotel before departing for Ypres (officers were also stationed with local families and at the nearby "Crown Hotel", but these were within the village and did not border the Lyndhurst Camp). Unveiled on 10th April 1921, the cross was built to a primitivist aesthetic, based on a design concept by Alice Liddell (the famous inspiration for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland), who was present at the unveiling with her husband Reginald Hargreaves. They lost two sons in the war, and their names are present on the memorial. Most of the cost of the memorial was paid for by Alice and Reginald Hargreaves. To find the memorial take the Beaulieu road out of Lyndhurst at the former Lyndhurst Park Hotel and at immediately turn left into a car park, passing Bolton's Bench on your right.
