About the memorial: This war memorial is in the form of a teak crucifix on a Portland stone plinth. The figure of Christ is gilded. The memorial is surrounded by iron railings and there are two Portland stone plaques on the wall of the church behind listing the names of the fallen. The memorial is located adjacent to the Church of the Annunciation, Bryanston Street, Marylebone, London. This is a Grade II* listed church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mayfair & Hyde Park Walk: The Church of the Annunciation was built in 1912 to a design by Sir Walter Tapper, a British Architect, known for his Gothic Revival Churches. He also designed the War Memorial. The Church is a Grade II listed building. This memorial is in the form of a “Calvary” (Greek for “A skull”). It was the name of the hill, where a skull was found, on which Jesus was crucified and then over time has became associated with a sculpture or picture representing the crucifixion. The calvary is often shown with three steps symbolising Faith, Hope and Love which is perhaps seen at the base of the cross. In June 2007 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation, through the War Memorials Trust, gave a grant to clean the plinth, re-point any open joints, clean and repair the wooden cross and clean the gilding. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route:From here turn right down Portman Street and then straight across Oxford Street down Park Street. At Upper Brook Street turn left and along to Grosvenor Gardens and walk to the far end to find Temple. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
