Type: Non freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Attached to a building/structure
Description: Board/Plaque/ Tablet
Lettering: Inscribed on a plaque
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Oak framed memorial plaques fixed to the outside of an earlier lychgate structure (which was originally a shelter over a natural spring/ well). WWI served names inscribed on eight panels, four each side. Identical dedication on both groups of four panels. For WWI died see WMO/295545 inside the associated church. The lychgate was originally constructed as a cover village well in 1897 on the School Common (The Green), in front of the now Junior School, as a memorial to Rev Winfield Cooper, the first vicar of Copthorne. Its function ceased when water was piped to Copthorne and it fell into disrepair. In 1911 the Cooper family financed the relocation of the well cover to form a Lychgate for the church in order to save it from further dilapidation The Lychgate structure remains a memorial that predates the memorial boards added following World War I and so was not dedicated as nor intended as a war memorial.
