Status: On subsequent site(s)
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Seat
Materials:
  • Stone Stone (any)
Lettering: Inscribed on a plaque
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: Semi-circular stone seat in three compartments, with (slate?) plaques affixed at head height. The bench was originally at the junction of Bath Road and The Avenue, but now is closer to the church. The plaques were originally bronze, but these were stolen in the 1960s. IWM's photo of the original memorial show that the replacement plaques are noticably different. The church WWI project suggests that some of the names were mistranscribed. Comparison of the old and new photos shows that where some plaques originally had three names, they now have two, and also that the central dedication is different.
