About the memorial: The memorial is sited on a wall of thhe Embankment by Temple Steps between Temple station and Blackfriars station. The bronze bas relief is by sculptor Frederick Brook Hitch and depicts nereids (sea nymphs) swimming on either side of a cross section of an interior of a submarine. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk : Here is another memorial telling a story in pictures. You can see the loneliness of a submarine out in the ocean and the cramped conditions experienced by the submariners. The central relief is surrounded by sea spirits, in the form of humans, casting nets and seaweed as if to emphasise the trap in which the men are caught. On either side there are figures of women representing Truth (on the left) and Justice (on the right) for which the men are fighting. The hooked anchors on either side of the allow wreaths to be hung, especially on the Sunday before Remembrance Day when there is a special ceremony by submariners. In 1992 a second plaque was added to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the dedication of the memorial. The lists on either side show the submarines lost in the two wars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Route
