About the memorial: This memorial consists of three components: the first was a three-storey, brick built extension to the existing Victoria Jubilee Infirmary Hospital (now the Tynemouth Royal Infirmary); the second was a stone dedicatory plaque which was originally erected in the entrance hall of the memorial extension and featured a relief carving of a physician holding children's hands; and the third is a semi-circular stone wall outside the hospital opposite the site of the memorial extension which features a bronze plaque with the relief carving of an angel and the dates of the First and Second World Wars and refers to a book of honour stored in the public library. War Memorials Trust understands that the memorial extension was demolished in 1999/2000 and that the internal plaque and possibly the ornamental stonework which marked the entrance to the memorial extension were saved and are in storage in the surviving hospital buildings. The memorial wall remains outside the hospital although there were local discussions in 2002/2003 to relocate it to nearby Northumberland Square. The memorial wall is Grade II listed. Wide cenotaph has projecting centre with low-relief panels depicting angel and uniformed men; bronze-wreathed band; low pyramidal coping; classical-style benches set against canted walls breaking forward either side and ending in low square piers with projecting panels on street front. Nosed granite steps to flagged terrace enclosed by walls.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Panels on canted walls inscribed TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED IN THE BOOK OF HONOUR TREASURED IN THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, at left; at right THIS MONUMENT AND THE INFIRMARY EXTENSION WERE ERECTED AS THE TOWN'S WAR MEMORIAL IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE.
