About the memorial: The Grade II listed memorial in the Cambridgeshire village of Reach, at the edge of the Fens, is a red Mansfield stone pillar with a shallow pyramidal top on a double plinth and a base. It stands on Fair Green, and is surrounded by a square gravelled area and a low post and chain fence. There is an inscription on one face of the pillar giving details of the regiment, date and cause of death of the fallen of World War I. In September 2002 War Memorials Trust gave £250 towards work to clean the memorial, rake out decayed concrete on the top of the base and refill with new concrete, replace edging where necessary, repaint the chains and fix the corner posts and re-cut all the letters and paint them black. The grant also covered the cost of two new metal flower containers. After the work was completed the memorial was re-dedicated at a service on 10th November 2002. The memorial was built in the early 1920s. Reach is fortunate in not having a memorial for World War II because everyone who left the village for that conflict returned.
