About the memorial: The memorial is a brass eagle lectern, which was donated in memory of Lord Alexander George Boteville Thynne, DSO, MP, the youngest son of the 4th Marquess of Bath. The lectern was unveiled on the 3rd October 1923 as part of the dedication of a new war memorial chapel in the south aisle of the Abbey (now the Gethsemane Chapel). While he was a serving officer, at the time of his death, Thynne was one of Bath's two Conservative MPs. The lectern was supplied by Messrs. Jones & Willis. An account of the dedication (and photographs) were published in the Bath Chronicle, 6th October 1923.

The photograph currently attached to this entry is not NOT the Thynne memorial lectern. It is the Abbey's main lectern, and it has an inscription stating that it was presented to the Abbey in memory of a Richard Bligh, who died in 1869. The Thynne memorial lectern was less elaborate and was intended to be placed in the war memorial chapel (now the Gethsemane Chapel). Two photographs of the Thynne memorial lectern were published on the front page of the "Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette" of the 6th October 1923 and it is clearly a different one from the lectern pictured in this entry. According to the Chronicle report of the dedication, the Thynne memorial lectern was supplied by Messrs. Jones and Willis, and the photographs show a much less-elaborate design on a cylindrical base, with the eagle's head looking up and to its left. The lectern is similar to items nos.184 and 13544 as depicted in the 1905 Jones and Willis catalogue (see link), although the eagle has a more dramatic pose than the ones depicted there. The description of the Thynne memorial in the IWM register (WMR #7314) is puzzling, especially the reference to "four pillars with tracery and a base."
