About the memorial: The memorial is part of the bridge and located close to Waverley Station. The memorial faces towards the castle with Calton Hill behind. The Monument is located on the south east bridge pier of North Bridge with the depicted soldiers facing west. The construction was from 1894 and completed in 1897. It consists of a group of four soldiers and has 24 individual carved stone elements with 4 associated bronze elements. The bronze inscription panel reads:- Edinburgh Walk IN MEMORY OF OFFICERS, NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY DURING THE FOLLOWING CAMPAIGNS; AFGHANISTAN 1878-1880 EGYPT 1889 CHINLUSHAI 1889-1890 CHITRAL 1895 TIRAH 1897-1898 SOUTH AFRICA 1900-1902. The Memorial is about to be renovated and a new plaque added to cover all ranks who gave their lived for their country from when the Regiment was raised in 1689 to 2006 when it was amalgamated as part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.
