About the memorial: Clare war memorial is an octagonal Celtic cross memorial, approx. 19ft high, and is constructed from Clipsham stone, which is a type of limestone. It is located in Market Place, Clare. The base of the memorial has flint detailing on all faces with the second, third and fourth tiers having inscribed and painted names of the fallen from World War I and II. On the four panels at the base of the cross are carved the Arms of Clare, the Suffolk Regiment and those of St Edmund and St George. The memorial was unveiled by Colonel, Sir Courtenay Warner Bart., and dedicated by Canon W.T.Farmilae on 23rd October 1921. The memorial was built by F.J.Lindley of Sudbury. The unveiling ceremony was reported in the Suffolk Free Press of 26th October 1921 Re-dedicated in 1948, in 2010 a grant was given by the War Memorial Trust of £2,945 towards the total cost of £5,897 for repairs and renovation of the memorial.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
