About the memorial: This memorial was previously listed as from an unknown C of E church.Recently it has been discovered that this memorial was originally from Holy Trinity Church (formerly on Parliament Street) in 1940 Holy Trinity was amalgamated with St James and the memorial was moved to St James Church. In 1972 St James' Church was closed, in 1978 the memorial was found in the church, cleaned up and attached to the wall. It was stolen in 1992. The memorial was photographed in the pub in 1996 but has since been moved and its whereabouts is unknown. The memorial is a wooden plaque, divided into 4 panels by a large cross. The cross originally held a carved figure of Christ but this was removed in the 1940s. There is an inscription on the sides of the plaque which reads 'Lord all pitying Jesu Blest' on the left and 'Grant them Eternal Rest' on the right. An inscription across the bottom reads 'The chancel screen and this tablet are dedicated to the men who fell in the great war.' On the top of the plaque are the dates 1914 1918 and in the 4 panels are inscribed 83 names, including Dr. Noel Chavasse V.C. and Bar. In the 4 corners of the plaque are the letters A M D G for Ad maiorem Dei gloriam (for the greater glory of God) The connection with Holy Trinity explains why Dr Chavasse is on the memorial as his work with the Holy Trinity Industrial School is well documented.
