About the memorial: The memorial is located in the back right of the courtyard. Waterhouse Square was formerly the building of the Prudential Company and the building was known as Prudential Assurance Buildings. There is an accompanying pair of A-Z nominal roll memorials listing staff of the Pru who fell in World War II. There is free access to the square, which forms a courtyard within the Prudential Insurance buildings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk: Prudential Assurance was formed in 1848 and by 1879 had moved into this new “Victorian Gothic” Head Office designed by Sir Alfred Waterhouse (who also designed the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall). The bronze and pink granite (WWI) memorial by Blundstone shows a dying soldier being supported by two angels, but note the reality captured by his awkward positioning on the remains of a battle ground. Also discover what each of the women at the corners of the memorial are holding to represent branches of the armed forces. Blundstone’s women are also distinctive by the way they are dressed and their demeanor! The Trojan myth that men died for glory and women is reflected in this most absorbing bit of storytelling. Blundstone sculpted several War Memorials including the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium and those in Folkestone & Stalybridge. There are also two separate memorials for WWII victims. They show two different figures of St George ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Route:
