About the memorial: Heston War Memorial. 1918 by Arthur G. Walker, sculptor. Portland stone. Statue of a private soldier in full marching kit, standing at ease. Square pedestal over a three stage stepped base, with lists of names of the fallen and reliefs of naval activity on each side. Matching posts and chains surround the memorial. Front inscription opens: IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. A later inscription was added to the base, reading REMEMBER ALSO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF HESTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945. The memorial was the gift of Sir Frederick and Lady Becker, and was unveiled on June 1st 1918, several months before the Armistice. The memorial originally stood on a shallow earthen mound; the present stepped base was formed after 1945. See Middlesex Chronicle, 9th November 1962.c Historic England Listing entry

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
