The whole was made and erected by workmen residing in the town. The name panels are of bronze having 238 names on them. The cenotaph is erected at the south end of the South Walks Avenue where six roads converge. It stands on a cement concrete foundation 12 feet deep into the old moat originally outside the old Roman wall at one time surrounding the town. At the back is a wreath and sword, similar to the front and a large panel. In the centre of this panel is a bronze plate with the inscription: 'This cenotaph was erected by public subscription and unveiled by the Rt. Hon. Lord Ellenborough C.B. on Empire Day 1921.' The above caption was written by A L T Tilley, Mayor of Dorchester 1920 and Chairmen of the memorial committee. Memorial cost œ700. Sculptor, Mr A Grassby of Dorchester. Bronze founder, Mr R Membury of Dorchester.'
