About the memorial: The war memorial in the Nottinghamshire former mining village of Creswell, near the county borders with Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, is a white marble statue of an infantryman in World War I uniform standing on the top of a Portland stone pillar which has a moulded top and base. The front elevation of the pillar, and one side elevation, have been faced with polished dark grey granite panels with the names inscribed and picked out in gold. These panels replaced the original carvings which had become illegible through age. When the panels were erected the names of some of fallen who had not previously been commemorated on the memorial were added. The pillar stands on a plinth and a two-stepped base of white stone surrounded by a low post and chain fence. It is situated on a concrete area within a small park on the corner of Elmton and Colliery Roads.
