About the memorial: The war memorial in the Derbyshire village of Holbrook, at the southern end of the Pennines, is a granite Celtic cross on a shallow block of stone which stands on a plinth and a three-stepped base. There is Celtic decoration on the arms of the cross and a hemispherical projection of stone in the middle of the cross. The names of the fallen of World War I are listed on the front of the plinth under the dedication, and the names of all those who served are inscribed on a Welsh slate plaque fixed to the wall beneath the memorial. The fallen of World War II are commemorated on the side of the plinth. The memorial stands on a wall beside the entrance to the churchyard of St Michael’s and is surrounded on three sides by iron railing
