About the memorial: The Portland memorial is a twelve metre high Portland stone obelisk. It stands on Yeates Road, on the brow of an escarpment overlooking Portland harbour and Chesil beach. The obelisk is set on a plinth on a base. Laurel wreaths in half relief are carved at the bottom of all four sides of the obelisk against the moulding above the plinth. There is a World War I dedication on the front face of the obelisk, a World War II dedication on the front face of the base and names of the fallen on all four faces of the plinth and on the base. Wire mesh to contain wreaths surrounds the base of the memorial. The memorial is set within a square gravelled area surrounded by a low stone wall, and there is an additional turfed apron to the southern side, enclosed by a stone kerb.
