About the memorial: Propeller for a Boulton & Paul FE2b biplane. Constructed of laminated wood with brass boss and tips. The plaque above the propeller states the following: 'WILLIAM ROWLAND DING (1885 - 1917) W. Rowland Ding was chief test pilot for Blackburn Aeroplane Co. during World War One and flew more types of aircraft than any other British airman of his generation. On Saturday May 12th 1917 he was testing a BE2c naval bomber at Soldier's Field, Roundhay, when the plane's wing collapsed and he crashed at high speed near North Lane. He was killed instantly. A memorial propeller was erected near the crash site but was frequently vandalised and was replaced at least once. This propeller was installed in the 1920s but is not the same type of aeroplane that crashed. In the 1930s it was stolen but turned up on the wall of the Nag's Head pub in Vicar Lane in 1975 and was restored and given to Leeds Museums.
