About the memorial: The granite memorial, paid for by public subscription, was erected in 2004 to commemorate over 8,400 people who died whilst patients in Epsom’s asylums. It also commemorates ‘the servicemen of two world wars who are buried here’. Two soldiers are known to be buried here, Private P. McMahon, died 1 December 1916 and Private H.W. James, died 7 February 1941. Both men have Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstones in the Commission plot in Epsom cemetery. The IWM Register notes that - "You need to come off the roundabout slowly ready to pull over into the layby with little warning at the former entrance to Horton Estate Cemetery, east side of Horton Lane, just south of the Hook Road Arena Roundabout at a layby
