About the memorial: The war memorial for the World War I fallen of Gilling East, Cawton and Grimstone, villages on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire moors, is a sandstone archway forming the west entrance to churchyard of Holy Cross Church, Gilling East. On the lintel there is a dedication in gold-painted Gothic script on a red background and into the piers are set enamelled brass tablets on each of which is a gilded list of names of the fallen. A stone cross stands on top of the lintel. The memorial is Grade II listed. The original entry for this memorial described it as a lychgate. It is not - a lychgate needs to be deep enough to accommodate a coffin awaiting the arrival of the clergyman who is taking the funeral service.
