About the memorial: Bronze plaque originally located at Broughton Co-operative Building and Shop-fitting department. In 2009 it was found in a scrap dealers yard in Trafford. War Memorials Trust funded towards its conservation and repair and permanent relocation to a Co-operative Funeralcare store in Salford. This memorial is duplicated by the IWM Register 43561 (which places it in London) and 75809 (which places it correctly) because of its nomadic existence over the years. It was also duplicated on this website by 221211.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

Salford Co-op restored WW1 soldiers’ memorial and was unveiled on Remembrance Day 2012. The Roll of Honour, which measures about 5 ft high and 30 inches wide records the forty-nine names and regiments of local men who worked for the Greater Manchester Co-operative Wholesale Society Buildings and Shopfitting Department, at Vere Street, Salford operative and were enlisted in Salford and Manchester.The building closed in 1968 and the memorial disappeared, only to turn up several years ago in a Manchester scrapyard, when Manager Peter Morgan found the memorial battered and broken in a pile of mixed metals in the yard.
He contacted the War Memorials Trust who then put him in touch with their Regional Volunteer, who in turn contacted the BBC and the Great War Forum. Members recognised the memorial and thus set the wheels in motion to restore it to its former glory.
In a really nice touch surviving members of people on the plaque were invited to the ceremony including Carol Pearson who, is the grand daughter of Peter Hulland from Clitheroe, who was killed in Belgium aged just twenty-three.
Carol said: "My mum and I knew that there was a memorial somewhere so when I heard about this being found I knew it was the one. "It looks fantastic and it's great that people are interested; it's good to know that these men will not be forgotten."
The carefully restored memorial was unveiled at The Co-operative Funeralcare, on Cross Lane, in Langworthy.
About sixty people attended the ceremony on Remembrance Day including, Canon Wyatt from St Paul's Church and Father Sean from St James's who each did a reading, school children from nearby St Paul's and Holy Family primary schools, Royal British Legion  groups  from   Langworthy, Broughton and Pendleton also laid wreaths at the dedication ceremony, accompanied by relatives of those commemorated on the plaque. Merchant Navy and a bugler who played the Last Post as the standards were lowered as a mark of respect.
It was restored using funding of £4,500 from The Co-operative Membership and £2,500 from the War Memorials Trust.
Andy Waters, the manager of the Coop Funeral Parlour, arranged to have the memorial re-sited and re-dedicated at the Cross Lane offices.
The memorial sited in the foyer, will be available for members of the general public to view and hopefully recognise their family members.
