About the memorial: A member of the congregation, Mr Clive Hardy, has produced a booklet with information on the circumstances in which many of the men whose names are on the memorial met their deaths. This can be found below the memorial which is a large white marble tablet mounted within a semicircular stone archway on the south wall of St John's Church. The memorial has a semicircular head which features an engraved angel holding a wreath and surrounding leaf designs. Above sits a carved Latin cross. In the centre of the memorial, the dedication is in black lettering with the names in five columns. There are 157 names and it is therefore strange that the church should contain no WW2 memorial, a fact confirmed by a church member who kindly rang the minister during my visit.
