About the memorial: The standard of no 201 squadron; Guernsey's own; Royal Air Force/ Western Front 1915-1918 Norway 1940/ Arras Atlantic 1941-1945/ Ypres 1917 Bismark/ Somme 1918 Normandy 1944/ this standard was presented to the squadron on 16 december 1955 at/ Pembroke Dock by the air officer commanding no 19 group. Its replacement/ was presented during the squadron's seventieth anniversary celebrations in/ November 1984 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh./ formed in October 1914 as no 1 squadron of the naval wing of the/ Rroyal Flying Corps, the squadron was redesignated no 201 Squadron Royal/ Air Force in April 1918. During the first world war the squadron was/ awarded the Croix de Guerre for its assistance to the French army and two/ squadron pilots were awarded VCs. During the second world war the squadron,/ equipped with flying boats, attacked 20 submarines sinking seven. One DSO,/ 11 DFCS, 2 bars to DFCS and 11 DFMS were awarded to squadron aircrew./ in 1958 the squadron re-equipped with Avro Shackletons and in 1965/ moved to its present base at RAF Kinloss Scotland. In 1970 it became/ the first squadron to fly the Hawker Siddley Nimrod, the world's first pure-jet/ maritime aircraft. During the Falklands conflict, squadron crews flew long/ range operational missions from Ascension Island./ in 1939, Kingsley Wood, as Secretary of State for Air announced/ the formal affiliation between the squadron and the island of Guernsey./ this link has strengthened over the years and as a consequence the/ squadron's first standard was presented for; laying-up' in this church/ by the officer commanding, Wing Commander D J Earl, on 17 March 1985./ in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter/ le Cheminant, the Dean of Guernsey the Very Reverend Canon J W Foster/ accepted the standard into safe-keeping on behalf of the people of the island.
