About the memorial: The memorial sculptor was G. Ledward with the Architect H. C. Bradshaw. Damage was inflicted upon this memorial during the Blitz. It was determined that this damage would be left as a reminder of what the memorial had experienced and survived. ---------------------------------------------- Westminster Walk: The memorial is made from Portland Stone in the form of a cenotaph. It has 5 bronze figures cast from guns captured from the Germans and were based on particular individuals from each of the 5 regiments. The badges of the various regiments appear below. In WWII the memorial got damaged by German bombing and the figures were pierced in many places by bomb fragments. One of the depicted soldiers had a hole in its left shoulder and it’s cheek. The sculpture Gilbert Ledward suggested, when asked about their repair, that some of these should be left as honourable scars of war. In 1917 Ledward served as a lieutenant with the Royal Garrison Artillery and experienced war at first hand. In 1918 he was seconded to the Ministry of Information as an official war artist. Ledward sculpted several other war memorials in the UK. Sculptor: Gilbert Ledward>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Go into St James’ Park, turn R and at the edge of the park by The Mall find the Royal Artillery memorial. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
