About the memorial: Bronze statue of Gordon in the undress uniform of a field officer, standing in an attitude of meditation, his left foot on a broken mortar. His left arm is crossed over the waist, and the hand, holding a Bible, supports the elbow of the right arm. It stands on a plinth with two bronze relief plates on the left and right sides, showing the four virtues (left) FORTITVDE, FAITH, and (right) CHARITY, JVSTICE respectively. Fortitude has a shield with the text RIGHT FEARS NO MIGHT. Between the foliated frieze at the top of the plinth are banderols with the names SOUDAN KHARTOUM - GRAVESEND EQUATOR - CRIMEA 1855 CHINA 1864 - QUINSAN SOOCHOW (Statue) HAMO THORNYCROFT ARA (plinth) HAMO THORNYCROFT RA SC (relief right) HAMO THORNYCROFT 18— Unveiled 16 October 1888 in Trafalgar Square. The pedestal was inspired by that of Le Sueur's Charles 1 near that location. Removed in 1943 for the temporary display of a Lancaster bomber and re-erected in Victoria Embankment Gardens in 1953.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.
