About the memorial: Gurney Road near Mousehold Avenue junction. The memorial is a silver metal plaque with black writing, mounted on a grey stone and surrounded with flint stones. It is laying down on the ground, on a slope, with the road above it. Top left hand corner is the date; 19-39. Top right hand corner is the date; 19-45. In the top middle is a RAF logo. The dedication reads; Honouring the memory of, Plt. Off. Colin Barton R.N.Z.A.F, Flt Sgt James Lemon R.C.A.F, Flt. Sgt. Robert Kater R.C.A.F, Sgt. Donald Carpenter R.A.F.V.R. The crew of a Bristol Beaufort which crashed on this site on 25th July 19-42. And Sgt. Ernest Nightingale D.F.M. R.A.F.V.R. Pilot of the Hampden bomber which crash-landed in Long Valley Mousehold on 12th February 19-42. This plaque dedicated by the citizens of Norwich on 22nd April 19-90. (the dates on this plaque have hyphens within the year, just as written in transcript above) Written on a notice board situated on the footpath to the bandstand on the opposite side of the road; Near the junction of Gurney Road with Mousehold Avenue is a memorial plaque that mark the spot where an aircraft crashed in 1942 during the Second World War, and which commemorates the crews of this and other aircraft that crashed on Mousehold Heath during the same year. As with the replacement of the bandstand, the installation of the plaque was made possible by the work of local people interested in the Heath, and with the support of local firms.
