Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Lychgate
Materials:
  • Stone Limestone
  • Timber Oak
Lettering: Inscribed on a plaque
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: The memorial stands at the entrance to the village cemetery. An oak framed structure with timber pegged joints and clay plain tile roof standing on a stone plinth. The panels bearing the transcription and names are of slate with incised lettering, the slates being vertically bedded in a render finish on the plinth front faces either side of the gate. While not in poor condition, the walls are leaning outwards and there are cracks in the stonework, and the timber structure above is spreading outwards above the leaning walls, all probably due to the closeness of the very large trees and adverse effects on the foundations. In addition there is some decay of the cill beams of the lychgate where bearing on the walls and other areas of localised decay. The church is to be found up a side road off Pond Side at the east end of the village.
