About the memorial: Condition of memorial is fair to good. Legibility of the inscriptions is good, stone condition is fair with some staining and mortar is in a fair condition with minor weathering. 18 OTU Wellington HE818 had departed Worksop for Night Circuits at 2015 on 07/03/44. The aircraft overshot the runway but to failed to climb above 600ft, lost control and crashed at 2035. Four crew were killed but the Rear Gunner survived, albeit only to be KIA in August 1944. 425 Sqn Halifax NA581 KW-U had departed Tholthorpe at 0942 for a routine training flight on 02/08/44. For unknown reasons the aircraft was seen to dive into the ground from approximately 4000ft and explode on impact one mile SW of Blyth at 1255. All seven crew were killed.
