About the memorial: Situated on the wall on the left just inside the church. It could be argued that these are separate memorials,as recorded by the IWM Register, but they are side by side and have been entered as one so there it is. FIRST WORLD WAR This memorial is a wall-mounted slate tablet set within a Portland stone frame. Borders of oak leaves and acorns are carved in relief on the frame. A stone cross at the top centre is between the kneeling figures of St George and St Michael. It was designed by Sir Herbert Baker, who was one of the three leading architects of the War Graves Commission Cemeteries built after the First World War. SECOND WORLD WAR The War Memorial for the Second World War in St Michael & All Angels’ church is a wall-mounted slate tablet with incised lettering with a Portland stone surround. The surround features a Maltese cross carved in the top centre and a carved leaf design on the side borders.
