About the memorial: In 2009 the Army Apprentice Associations of Arborfield, Chepstow, Harrogate and Carlisle formed a memorial steering committee to design, raise funds and construct a memorial located on plot 331a at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire. The finished memorial provides a fitting tribute to over 70,000 army apprentices who have served our country in every conflict since 1923 to 2004, and in many cases gave their lives. The design is mounted upon a base platform that represents the the circle of life, the four benches represent the apogee reached by the Army Apprentice Scheme in the 20th century in its final form of four army apprentice schools located at Arborfield, Chepstow, Harrogate and Carlisle. The monolith carries the Army Apprentice School badge, and the center circle poem annotates the ethos that controlled and directed the activities of the army apprentice system. The last school, Arborfield closed in 2004. The memorial, constructed in granite, cost £63K and a further £40K was invested in the National Memorial Arboretum to provide a maintenance income for the life of the memorial.
