About the memorial: This is the tomb of Capt Edward Thornborough Parker who was the favourite aide-de-camp of Lord Nelson. He was wounded in action off Boulogne and subsequently died of the wounds on 27/9/1801, aged 23. Nelson greatly liked and respected Parker and travelled to his funeral with Lady Hamilton, paid for the funeral and donated the memorial, which was moved to its present site in1999 and restored. This is the only monument in the country known to have been donated by Lord Nelson. A metal plaque stands alongside the memorial. As a tomb this would not normally qualify as a war memorial, but the fact that it has been moved suggests that it has been separated from the body so can be reclassified. The shape of the original stonework does not suggest that the body is inside it.
