About the memorial: As well as the Weather Heath Memorial (Elveden Column beside the A11), the church of St. James, Icklingham has mounted on the wall inside in the south east corner of the nave, an etched and illuminated brass plaque, commemorating the names of 11 men who fell in WW1. Beneath this is a similar, smaller plaque, commemorating 2 men who fell in WW2. beneath that a smaller plate with "ALSO IN MEMORY OF" then the names and then "WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DURING THE WAR OF 1939-1945" Charles Linge is not listed on the Icklingham face of the Elveden Column, but on the Elveden face, and he is also commemorated on the Elveden WW1 memorial in the Church of St. Andrew and St. Patrick.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

On the larger plate is etched"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF" in an arc above a shield of St George's Cross, surmounted by a crown and supported on either side by a banner, then the 11 names giving rank, forename, surname and unit, apparently in order of the date they fell and under them THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED BY // PARISHIONERS TO MEN OF ICKLINGHAM // WHO SERVED AND FELL DURING // THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 //.
