About the memorial: This memorial is a Grade II* listed structure sitting on the north side of the A11 London Road.It is a stone Corinthian column standing 30 metres high, surmounted by a large stone urn, upon an elevated square base, and was commissioned by the Earl of Iveagh of Elveden to commemorate the 48 men of the parishes of Eriswell, Elveden and Icklingham who died during WW1, to which were added a further 6 names after WW2. The memorial sits at the point where these three parishes meet. The front, south face carries the general commemoration and lists the fallen from Icklingham, towards which it faces: the east face lists the fallen from Elveden, towards which it faces: the west face lists the fallen from Eriswell, towards which it faces. The rear, north face contains a doorway (elevated above the ground level) from which there is a 148-step staircase within the monument. It is the tallest war memorial in Suffolk and one of the tallest in Great Britain. It was unveiled on 21 November 1921 by Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson GCB DSO, and dedicated by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. The unveiling ceremony was also attended by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh, younger son of Duleep Singh, the former owner of the Elveden Estate. Lord Iveagh's instructions to the architect was that is should be taller than the Earl of Leicester Monument at Holkham Hall, but not taller than Nelson's Column. Reported in the Bury Free Press of 26th November 1921
