About the memorial: The Kershader/Pairc war memorial stands beside the road in the village of Kershader on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It is a tall pillar built of stones and topped by a black painted pyramidal cap, with smaller pyramids on the top corners. On the front face of the pyramidal cap is a Celtic cross painted white. On the front of the pillar is a plaque with a dedication and names, and the memorial is surrounded by a wall The Kershader/Pairc war memorial stands beside the road in the village of Kershader on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It is a tall pillar built of stones and topped by a black painted pyramidal cap, with smaller pyramids on the top corners. On the front face of the pyramidal cap is a Celtic cross painted white. On the front of the pillar is a plaque with a dedication and names, and the memorial is surrounded by a wall. The memorial originally recorded those of the villages of Habost, Kershader, Garyvard and Caversta who gave their lives during World Wars I and II and because of this it was known as the Kershader/Cearsiadir memorial. However, following the work in 2002 it is called the Pairc war memorial to reflect its inclusion of all villages in the Pairc area- Kershader/Cearsiadair, Habost/Tabaost, Garyvard/Taobh a'Ghlinnie, Cromore/Cromor, Marvig/Marbhig, Gravir/Grabhair, Lemreway/Taobh a'Ghlinne, Orinsay/Orasaigh, Calbost/Tabaost and Caverstay/Cabharstadh . The memorial replaced an earlier 1923 memorial- see WMO/273186 The builder was Mr Macdonald of 2-4 Kershader, who later lost 3 sons in WW2. Dedicated before 27th October 1934, Rededicated 31 August 2002, after the names of those from the old school districts of Cromore/Cromor, Planasker (Marvig/Marbigh and Calbost), Gravir/Grabhair and Lemreway/Leumrabagh were added to the memorial and a dry stone wall was built around the memorial. The memorial is at the east end of the village. Apparently the Second World War names were not added until Mrs Macdonald (wife of the buillder) died as she did not wish her sons to be listed on the memorial when she was alive. This information was on a leaflet issued at the opening of the reconstituted memorial and the local historical society has a pamphlet on the memorial
