In Cleethorpes in the late 1960’s there were two Methodist Churches, Trinity Methodist, the former Wesleyan Church and Mill Road, the Primitive Methodist Church. Each church had its own congregation, youth club, school room and evening activities, but both churches were showing signs of age and both needed some repair. It was also becoming clear that the need for two churches within 100 yards of each other was no longer viable, and as Mill Road was in a better state of repair (just), it was decided that both congregations should move to Mill Road. Joint services were first held and then around 1968, the churches merged leaving Trinity to stand alone and empty on St. Peter’s Avenue. Eventually, in 1972, this church was pulled down making way for a car park, next to Boots the Chemist.

The new church was then named St. Andrew’s, an apt name seeing as how the town of Cleethorpes was linked to fishing and St. Andrew was their patron saint. It was also felt that it was important to make a clean break from the past and welcome all newcomers to the new amalgamated church. However, within 10 years the fabric of the church was showing its age and with the high cost of maintenance it was necessary to consider the long term future. After careful deliberation, complete rebuilding was accepted as being preferable to extensive renovation of the old property, with the exception of the Memorial Hall at the south end of the car park, which was maintained.
All the old war memorials from both churches were brought into this new church, even the stained glass windows, from the old Mill Road Primitive church, and installed in the new building, where they were much more visible. 

The Memorial plaques from Trinity were stored in the roof of the new building, having been rescued from the derelict building, the World War 2 plaque referring to the deaf aid system in the old church was placed on the oak table of Mill Road. Quite recently, in October 2007, the old memorial plaques from Trinity were restored to their former glory by Skillington Workshop Ltd, Baxter’s Yard, 35-40, Stuart Street, Grantham, Lincolnshire at a cost of £510 plus VAT. 
On examination, the company found that the brass panels had been inlaid with black and red enamel, and were coated with copper corrosion. This was to be cleaned along with the enamel and then a coating of Cosmolloid  microcrystalline wax and buffed up using a lint-free cloth. The church received a grant for half of the work and following a collection, the congregation paid for the rest of the repair work. On Wednesday 26th September, 2007, three members of the congregation namely Harry Griffiths, Gordon Mumby and Charles Reading screwed the old plaques to the brick wall of the church using stainless steel screws as required by Skillington Workshop.

On Sunday 4th November, 2007, the memorial plaques originally in the Cleethorpes Wesleyan Church, known as Trinity were re-dedicated by the Minister of St. Andrew’s, the Reverend J. Michael Townsend whose address on the subject of Remembrance was well received. There was a good turn-out including relatives of the commemorated names, with several direct descendants of George Robert Showler. Eight Standards (flags) were paraded. The deputy lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Ian H Davey FCA, his Worship the Mayor of the Borough of North-East Lincolnshire, Councillor Stewart Swinburn and Mayoress, Councillor Mrs Karen Swinburn, and Shona McIsaac MP attended the service.


All the memorials within this church are in a good state of repair and are the responsibility of the trustees of the church of St. Andrews.



The Recreation Room, the War memorial Room built in 1922, and opened in 1923, is still where it was, and used by the church and by people of Cleethorpes.
