About the memorial: The plaque is inside the pavilion. Alongside the plaque there is an accompanying list of the young players who receive a Memorial scholarship. From the 1947 yearbook of the Mitcham Cricket Club: “A Memorial plaque is to be placed in the Pavilion to those members of the Club who fell in the two World Wars. Their gallant sacrifice will be commemorated by the annual award of a presentation bat and two years’ free membership of the Club with coaching, to two Mitcham boys. Each Mitcham school will be asked to nominate two boys annually, and from these will be selected the successful boys. The Club is most anxious to do its utmost to encourage the development of local boy cricketers, and it is most appropriate that the Memorial should perpetuate the memory of those, mostly young men, who died to preserve the English way of life.” This yearbook, catalogue number is L2 (796.358), is available on request at the Merton Heritage and Local Studies Centre, Morden Library, Civic Centre, Morden, Surrey SM4 5DX.
