Location: External
Setting: Roadside
Description: Obelisk
Materials:
  • Stone Marble
Lettering: Incised

  • First World War (1914-1918)
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: Standing within a grassed triangle at the junction of Chapel Lane with The Street/Freckenham Road.A white marble obelisk standing upon a three-tiered plinth, upon a three-tiered concrete platform base, set within a square sunken concrete enclosure, surrounded by a metal fence. The front (east) face is engraved with the names of the twelve men from the village who fell during WW1. The left (south) and right (north) faces list a further 34 men who served in the war. The rear (west) face commemorates two men who gave their lives during WW2. Unveiled on March 4th, 1920 by Major General, The Hon. J.E. Lindsey, it was built by Messrs H.G.Neville & Sons at a cost of £150-1s-0d and reported in the Bury & Norwich Post on 5th Mach 1920. In 1999 the memorial needed conservation work to repair a crack at the top of the memorial. This was carried out, the memorial was cleaned, the names of two men who fell in 1939-1945 were added and the railings were repainted. The War Memorials Trust contributed £250 towards these costs. It is unusual locally in that it also commemorates those who served in the Great War as well as those who fell (Note: The fallen are also commemorated on a further memorial in All Saints Church in Church Lane.)
