About the memorial: A 7-bay nave and lower aisle asymmetrical neo-Romanesque church with square-plan tower designed by Harold O Tarbolton. The foundation stone of the church was laid on the 10 Nov 1924 and dedicated on 9 May 1930. The dedication was carried out by the Church of Scotland but that was a formality as the church was always inteded to be ecumenical. It serves as a memorial to the staff of the Bangour Village Hospital (formerly the Edinburgh Pauper Lunatic Asylum) / Edinburgh War Hospital that died in France or whilst treating wounded troops at the hospital. Those that are recorded are: Donald Appleby; Isabella D Cousins; James Davidson; Walter Fairbairn; Murdo Graham;Donald Gunn; Alexander Hutchison; George T Kerr; Minnie R Mair; Jeannie E McClymont; Hugh McLean; Murdo McLean; William Shaw; James Wightman; Jeannie A Young. The banners of their regiments are laid up in the memorial aisle. Those are: The Royal Scots; The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles); The Seaforth Highlanders; The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders; The Highland Light Infantry; The Royal Field Artillery and; The Royal Engineers. A banner of the Red Cross is also present to represent the four female nurses. The building is constructed from a mix of local whin stone and sandstone brought from the demolished Hamilton Palace (the Hamilton family having previously owned the Bangour estate). The furniture was carved by one of the 'inmates', his name is not recorded. The hospital closed in March 2004 and the church held a service to mark the closure. The church remains heated and relatively well maintaind by NHS Lothian but is on the buildings at risk register. It is a category A listed building, HB number 51902. The interior is noted by Historic Scotland as ' Intact and unified remarkable neo-Romanesque decorative scheme. Coursed ashlar. Round-arches. Small integral gallery to N side and apsidal memorial chapel to S. Decoratively carved timber panelling around sanctuary in Perpendicular style. Oak organ, choir pews and chairs and altar rail. Stone altar at E with timber altar canopy and dossal curtain. Hammerbeam roof with corbelled braces and kingposts above. Barrel vaulted chapel with tie beams'. Access is to the site is free but you should be aware that access to the church and other buildings is not possible. Security guards patrol the site 24 hours a day. Other buildings on the site are deteriorating in condition and care should be taken.
