About the memorial: Standing in a grassed area between the church and the road, a tall (approx 12 ft), heavily carved celtic wheel cross, with symetric circular design ornamentation, linked by carved serpents. The top rear of the cross is adorned with a detailed carving of the Calvary.The front base of the cross bears the inscription, in raised letters: The cross was erected by the people of this parish in memory of Hugh Stewart McCorquodale Lieutenant Thorneycrofts Mounted Infantry. Youngest son of George McCorquodale of Gladlys, who at the call of duty volunteered for active service in South Africa and fell gallantly fighting on Spion Kop Natal on 24 January 1900 and was buried on the field of battle. This whole stands upon a flat topped pyramidal base, which also bears the inscription in raised letters: Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

YOUNGEST SON OF GEORGE McCORQVODALE OF GADLYS, WHO AT THE CALL OF DVTY VOLVNTEERED FOR ACTIVE SERVICE IN SOVTH AFRICA AND FELL GALLANTLY FIGHTING ON SPION KOP NATAL ON 24 JANVARY 1900 AND WAS BVRIED ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE. (Reverse) BE THOV FAITHFUL VNTO DEATH AND I WILL GIVE THEE A CROWN OF LIFE. GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.
