About the memorial: Situated in Crow Nest Park at the bottom of the main drive leading from the Boothroyd Lane entrance to the Park and in close proximity to the lake The Memorial commemorates the South African War of 1899 – 1902 Description - a bronze statue of a volunteer, with a slouch hat, bandolier and rifle on a red granite plinth with bronze plaques. The model for the statue was Leonard Crane, who served in the South African War and was killed in action during World War 1, October 1916 The Inscription reads:: This Statue was erected to commemorate the patriotism of the Officers and Men of the Auxiliary Forces and St. Johns Ambulance Brigade of Dewsbury and District who served their Country in the South African War. 1899 – 1902- and in memory of those who lost their lives during the campaign Names and plaques 1899 - 1902 Right hand side. Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

This statue was erected to commemorate/ the patriotism of the officers and men of/ the auxiliary forces and St. Johns Ambulance/ Brigade of Dewsbury and district who/ served their country in the South African/ War 1899 - 1902 and in in memory of those who/ lost their lives during the campaign.

Other three faces have details of the units involved and the names of the fallen and those who served.
