About the memorial: Canadian Armed Forces: Memorial to the Headquarters building of the Royal Canadian Air Force in WW2 with reference to 14,455 Canadians who lost their lives, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk: Lincoln’s Inn Fields is the largest square in London and began to be developed as a garden in the 18th century and at the end of the 19th century was taken over as a public space. Lincoln’s Inn was the earliest of the Inns of Court when the houses originally provided accommodation for visiting lawyers and others involved in court cases. During the 2nd World War the Royal Canadian Air Force were stationed here and the plaque, in English & Fench, describes how 85,000 Canadian Airmen were supported from this HQ. The memorial consists of a short path leading to a small plinth, a Canadian Maple tree on the other side of the path (part of the “Acer” family a Latin word meaning “sharp” describing the points of the maple leaf) and a plaque on house No 20 beyond. The Maple leaf was taken as the national symbol of Canada in mid 19th century and was incorporated into the badge of the Royal Canadian regiment in 1860. In both world wars the Canadian Troops used it as a distinctive sign on badges and equipment --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Route:
