About the memorial: Walter Tull played professional football for Clapton, Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town before 1914 (and signed for Rangers-Glasgow in 1917 although he seems not to have played for that club). He was only the second player of Afro-Caribbean descent to play in the top division of English football. He then became the first person of such descent to be commissioned as an officer during the First World War (to command 'white' troops, as opposed to commanding Native troops overseas) despite the fact the the 1914 Manual of Military Law specifically forbade this. He was killed in France in the Spring Offensive of 1918 and his body was never recovered. See also various other reports for other memorials to him in Northampton, Folkestone, and London/Glasgow. This memorial was dedicated when the stadium opened in 1999.

Front face - Through his actions WDJ Tull ridiculed the barriers of ignorance that tried to deny people of colour equality with their contemporaries. His life stands testament to a determination to confront those people and those obstacles that sought to diminish him and the world in which he lived. It reveals a man though rendered breathless in his prime, whose strong heart still beats loudly. This memorial marks an area of reflective space as a garden of remembrance. Rear face - Walter Daniel John Tull born 28 April 1888 1909 - Tottenham Hotspur FC 1911 - Northampton Town FC 1914 - Enlisted into 17th Battalion, 1st football 1917 - The first black Briton to be commissioned as a combat officer. 1918 - He was killed at the second Battle of the Somme.
