About the memorial: This iconic 1924 memorial to the beloved Cameronians Scottish Rifles regiment powerfully conveys the harsh realities of First World War trench warfare. The advancing soldier, machine gunner and their fallen compatriot communicate a heartbreaking sense of realism rarely displayed in a war memorial. The sculptor Lindsey Clark (1889 – 1977) was an army captain in the Cameronians who had been awarded a DSO for bravery. The inscription on the monument was later updated to incorporate the fallen from the Second World War. This magnificent bronze figure group speaks from the heart and the graphic imagery survives in the memory of all who see it. - Category ‘B’ listed - The memorial has be rectangular plinth, with a horizontal decorative caved band, raised on a three stepped granite base. Surmounting the plinth is a cast bronze scene depicting three figures. In the centre, a sergeant advancing ‘over the top’, to the right a dead body of officer and to the left a gunner opening fire. The memorial stands within an area enclosed by hedging and an ironwork fence. Memorial also includes a plaque explaining this history of the Battalions
