About the memorial: UK Civilians/Canadian Armed Forces: On 23 May 1943 a bombing raid destroyed 22 buildings and damaged over 3000 in central Bournemouth. The total number of victims is thought to have been 131, though estimates varied between 70 and 200. Many were in the Metropole Hotel on the site of the memorial, and many of these were Canadian servicemen. The memorial was unveiled on the 70th anniversary, 23 May 2013, as reported in the Bournemouth Daily Echo of that day. Bournemouth is thought of as a genteel resort, but had an important role in D Day preparations.
