SACRED to the Memory of ARTHUR ROWLEY HEYLAND of Ballin Temple, in the County of London-derry, Esquire Major of the 40th Regiment. Who closed a life of private excellence and professional honor in the glorious Victory of WATERLOO, June 18th 1815, in the 34th Year of his Age. He was the second Son of Rowley Heyland Esquire of Glen Oak, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Devoting himself to the service of his Country, He secured by his zeal, gallantry and judgement On the many trying occasions of six campaigns in PORTUGAL, SPAIN and FRANCE. The love of his associates, and the notice and confidence of the Duke of Wellington, by whom his value was frequently and signally distinguished. He commanded the 40th Regt. in two general actions, And again at the head of his beloved and admiring followers, While in the act of contributing by his heroic example to the total defeat of the Enemy. He exchanged the glories of earthly triumph and human applause For a blessed immortality; Leaving to his Widow and seven Children Those deep and permanant regrets which no Memorial can record; And which are their best offerings to the Memory of a Husband and Father who blended the manly qualities of the soldier with the tenderness of every domestic Virtue and Christian Grace. This Tablet was erected by his Widow. Mary eldest Daughter of the Rev'd John Kyffyn of this City. Herbert MacDonnell 5th Son of Major Heyland died 26th May 1816 aged 11 months.
