About the memorial: A hexagonal shrine of white stone with a dome set in the middle of a wall. Inside the shrine is a cross in Sicilian limestone, inlaid with Sicilian mosaics. As the photos of the explanatory signs indicate, the inspiration is the superb cathedral at Monreale near Palermo. The bronze memorial tablets are set into the curved walls at the back of the shrine and these are framed with Sicilian mosaics. A superb memorial, easily missed as it is in the courtyard of the building donated to the town by William Chambers and now the town offices. And three cheers to the council for the sign telling people to treat it with respect, and not as a place to sit and eat your lunch. Scottish War Memorial Project notes include " As part of the original scheme the Morelands Military Hospital which served wounded servicemen through the Great War was fully re-furbished, extended and re-equipped to provide a hospital for the community and this was also inaugurated on the same day. Of £20,000 raised by the Peebles area £15,000 was contributed to the hospital, and £5,000 to the shrine." The memorial covers Broughton, Drumelzier, Eddleston, Innerleithen, Kirkurd, Lyne, Meggat, Manor, Newlands, Skirling, Stobo, Traquair, Tweedsmuir, Walkerburn, West Linton and Peebles Note that the WW1 names include 2 VC's- Piper James Richardson and Thomas Riversdale Collyer- Fergusson (under the West Linton names). Note that Thomas Riversdale Collyer-Fergusson was from Sevenoaks, Kent, and is widely commemorated in the county. However his connection to West Linton is unknown, and he is not commemorated on the West Linton memorial.
