About the memorial: The Wallace Monument was erected in the Victorian Gothic style to commemorate the exploits of Sir William Wallace in the Wars of Independence against the English in the 1290s. It overlooks the site of his great victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297. After his defeat at Falkirk the following year he evaded capture for several years before being betrayed to the English, taken to London and executed in 1305. The memorial is within view of the eventual Scottish victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314. It was not the winner of the competition to erect a memorial to Wallace on this site. The winning entry was a Scottish lion devouring some other unfortunate beast, but was rejected by the organisers as being too obviously anti-English.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
